Introducing Juan District

Hello, everyone! Today, the spotlight is on an up-and-coming Filipino clothing brand called “Juan District” which is actually owned by a classmate of mine back in highschool, Zygred Calibjo. She earned her degree in Clothing Technology at the University of the Philippines and it’s so cool to know that she started her own clothing line! I’ve recently reconnected with Zygred and I’d like to share with you all this little interview I did with her.

What is Juan District?

Zygred: Juan District is a proud Filipino brand made to promote the Philippines and the Filipino race. It offers exclusivity, individuality, and modern nationalism/patriotism. It is a brand created to answer the need of modern Filipinos for a heroic tool serving as the mirror of their love and pride for the Philippines and for being Filipinos. And aside from being a cool clothing brand, Juan District aims to be a place where love and pride for the Filipino race and the Philippines are shown through cool and cute graphics shirts and accessories.

When and how did you start this brand? 

Z: I started it last August 2012 through an online store (Facebook page). I have always loved T-shirts especially graphic/statement shirts with funny and “cartoonish” designs and what I usually buy and wear are those withmakabayan/tatak-Pinoy illustrations or typography. But these kinds of shirts are very limited in number, hard to find, and the existing fit is not okay for me (I want longer shirts). Since I wanted to start my own business and I have a good background in printing and the clothing industry, i decided to put up my own maka-Filipino shirt brand, the Juan District. Hence, I think this solution is the answer for my “special” need for a shirt and for anyone who has this special list of requirements like me. This is kind of like my way of giving back to the Filipinos who helped me pay my college tuition, and my cool way of showing patriotism.

How do you market your products? 

Z: Via Facebook, bazaars around the metro especially in Quezon City, school fairs especially U.P. Fair, and word-of-mouth, which is the best marketing tool.

Who are your target customers? 

Z: The target market of Juan District is known as “Ang Juana’t Juan Ngayon”. They are the modern Filipinos who are:

• independent but still conservative in some ways;
• technology enthusiasts but will not put the environment at risk for it;
• expressive and adventurous but still aware of their limitations and consequences of their actions;
• determined individuals with goals of becoming successful and respected in their chosen field but still exude that light-hearted and not bossy aura;
• creative shirtaholics who buy versatile, limited edition, and good quality clothing that can be worn from office to gym to meeting with friends, from beach escapades to road trips, or from sunset to sunrise;
• those who want to show their love and pride for the country, especially the Pinoy pop culture, without being branded as “jologs” or wearer of souvenir shirts.

Who is the creative force behind Juan District?

Z: Me, the Calibjo family, my U.P.D. bff’s.

Do you have a tagline or motto?

Z: Juan District is Shirtaholics Approved XD

Z: We have this so-called “checklist of a bonafide shirtaholic” and “cool facts about Juan District” which present our edge from the rest.

Z: We offer shirts with a cause. Juan District is a brand that spreads not just cool vibes but also Filipino pride.

What is your dream for Juan District?

Z: After this very first collection, people will see a bolder, funnier, and cooler Juan District with enhanced quality of fabric since we now know what people really want, and hopefully a physical store aside from the online one and it will be located in a hand-picked area where creativity surpasses commercialization. And because of these plans, buyers/shirt lovers must always check our Facebook page to know the latest, cool news about Juan District.

1. This giveaway is open to Philippine residents only. If you reside outside the Philippines, you may join the giveaway if you have a valid Philippine address where the prizes can be shipped to.
2. This giveaway starts on August 31, 2013. As of the moment, we are aiming to end the giveaway once Juan District reaches 700 likes on their Facebook page, but this is still subject to change. Final end date will be announced sooner or later in my Twitter andFacebook platforms and on this blog post.
3. There will be one (1) winner to be selected at random via Rafflecopter. 09.12.13 UPDATE: There will be two (2) winners. One will be selected at random via Rafflecopter and will receive the Juan District items. A second winner will be selected based on the comments below and he/she will receive a surprise gift.
4. Winners will be announced within the week after the giveaway ends and will be contacted via email.
5. Winners will have to respond within 48 hours after I email them. If no reply has been received, a new winner will have to be drawn.
